Super Troopers 3 Review
Dear Super Troopers 3… the 2000’s called and they would like you to knock it off.
Dear Super Troopers 3… the 2000’s called and they would like you to knock it off. The physical comedy, gross out humor that helped raise the Millennial generation with such classics as American Pie, Road Trip, Jackass and yes even Super Troopers is instant death with today’s movie going audience.
Despite the one guy who shared the theater with me today and laughed through most of the movie by himself, I would argue very few people are looking for this type of humor today.
Don’t take my word for it. The quintessential movie franchise of this kind only had a $27 Million dollar run at the box office this year with Jackass: Best and Last. And lets face it, Johnny Knoxville, who actually had a promising comedy career before he screwed it up, has a lot of charisma and people love watching him. But the Broken Lizard Comedy team starring Jay Chandrasekhar (Thorny), Kevin Heffernan (Farva), Steve Lemme (Mac), Paul Sotor (Carl) and Erik Stolhanske (Rabbit), have almost nothing on the charisma scale.
Credit to Heffernan for bringing Farva alive for the 3rd time, but Chandresekhar, besides being interesting to look at, has very little charm. Lemme has a moment or two as Mac, but overall the group is devoid of interest. So aside from fans who very specifically like this uncharismatic comedy and specifically these guys, I don’t know how anyone can walk away from this movie saying it is good.
That said, this is the best of the 3 Super Trooper movies… You heard me right. As bad as this movie is, it is the best of the 3. And I be more qualified than most to judge, because I never watched Super Troopers in 2002 and I also didn’t watch Super Troopers 2 in 2018. I watched all three movies back to back to back today for the very first time.
And if I am being honest, had the first movie not crushed that very first scene with the pot smoking kids who have to eat their whole stash, I doubt there would have ever been a franchise to talk about in the first place. Veteran movie actor Brian Cox reprises his role for the 3rd time and once again brings his on screen talent to Captain John O’Hagen, who is now retired. Also I need to mention Nat Faxon, who plays the new Captain for Vermont’s highway Patrol. And he is very entertaining in this movie, but then again, he is also a groundling, a comedy troupe that brought us Will Ferrell, Phil Hartman and others.
The bottom line is if you are a fan of Super Troopers and Broken Lizard, you should go see this movie. Otherwise, wait for it to come out on streaming in a few weeks. GRADE: C
