Mutiny is Awful, But It’s Gonna Cost Amazon… And They Didn’t Even Make It!

Mutiny is Awful, But It’s Gonna Cost Amazon… And They Didn’t Even Make It!

Let’s face it, if you are going to see a Jason Statham movie, you know what you are in for. A lot of killing and some sort of Vengeance against bad people doing bad things to people his character cares about. And Mutiny is no different.

Although it is probably one of the worst movies of his career, you can’t argue that Statham doesn’t have fans, which is why they keep pumping out low budget flicks like The Beekeeper, Shelter and now Mutiny.

And while I could rant on about the many reasons Mutiny is the worst and how director Jean-Francois Richet somehow made 2 incomplete movies inside of a 95 minute runtime, the real story here is that despite this movie likely not making its money back at the box office, investors are still going to walk away happy because of Amazon.

Amazon? Why Amazon? Lionsgate is the North American distributor and Amazon has literally nothing to do with this movie. But they are still going to pay Millions for it.

And that’s because the day before Mutiny released to theaters nationwide, the movie popped up on Amazon prime for everyone to watch for free. And not only did regular people who might have paid for a movie ticket get a chance to see it at home, but pirate sites and re streamers were able to scrap the movie off the platform and make it available to the entire world.

So don’t be surprised when Amazon gets sued for half of the average domestic take home on a Statham movie… to the tune of $30 Million dollars for the mistake.

How did this happen? The details haven’t been released as Amazon is being very quiet, but from what we can gather the leak may have come from an arrangement Lionsgate Plus has on the Amazon Prime platform.

Eventually, Mutiny will be streamed  as a part of Lionsgate from Amazon plus and they likely provided the movie in advance of running on their streaming platform as well as Video on Demand options which generally become available at the end of a movie’s 45 day run.

This Snafu is definitely going to cost Amazon and may give investors a sigh of relief because Mutiny is not doing so well at the box office. And frankly speaking it’s not because of Amazon. The Movie is terrible. Statham is doing Statham things but the story is a hot mess.

Projections now expect the movie to make less than $10 Million in its opening weekend despite being released in 2,700 theaters across North America . Mutiny will likely have to make close to $40 Million to break even.

Statham’s latest movie, Shelter, which released at the beginning of this year was able to earn $54 million worldwide but still ended up losing money. And frankly speaking the story was better than Mutiny, so expect word of mouth to keep this film under $30 Million worldwide.

But perhaps because of Amazon’s mistake, Mutiny’s earnings will forever have an asterisk next to it as a movie that eventually broke even despite losing at the box office. The bigger implication no one is talking about is whether Jason Statham is washed up. But that is a story for another day.
