The Magician's Nephew Will Likely be a Feminist Fantasy: Here's Why...

Director Greta Gerwig was given the reigns to adapt C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, The Magician's Nephew book into a movie by Netflix. The movie is expected to have a wide theatrical and IMAX release on Feb. 12, 2027, and why not? Gerwig made $1.4B after directing the Barbie movie in 2023 and it became a cultural phenomenon. But Gerwig, who doesn't shy away from flaunting her feminist ideals on screen, may be in for a different response from fans if she chooses to go down the Barbie path with Narnia.

We recently watched THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW trailer. It has the telltales signs of a visually stimulating high quality Greta Gerwig movie in the vein of Barbie topped with the legendary music of Led Zeppelin (That must have cost Netflix a fortune). And while the movie initially seems set up like the book, here are some things we noticed that could be over reach by Gerwig:

• The White Witch has power on Earth, but she did not in the book.
• The White Witch destroys the "Eagle and Child" replica pub that C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and The Inklings regularly met.
• Polly appears to take the lead over Digory, who is the actor cast as Piggy in Lord of the Flies and he looks nothing like Digory from the book
• Aslan is Sex Swapped for Meryl Streep... Male Lions have manes and C.S. Lewis himself wrote this in a 1954 letter: “I did not say to myself 'Let us represent Jesus as He really is in our world by a Lion in Narnia': I said 'Let us suppose that there were a land like Narnia and that the Son of God, as He became a Man in our world, became a Lion there, and then imagine what would happen.'”

GERWIG's INFLUENCES AND PATTERN

• Raised by her Feminist activist mother
• Attended an all Girls High School and all Girl's College
• Has a Male Life Partner and doesn't believe in the traditional husband/wife relationship

Gerwig has directed 3 full movies prior to Narnia:

LADY BIRD (2017): A loose autobiography about herself... a Woman choosing women over men.

LITTLE WOMEN (2019): A movie about female relationships and has been described as a 21st Century Feminism Fantasy.

BARBIE (2023): The Patriarchy hurts everyone.

So what are the chances that THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW isn't a feminist adaptation of C.S. Lewis' work? History and what we know from casting and the trailer seem high. Netflix believes in Gerwig and prior to the trailer, C.S. Lewis' stepsons expressed their support.

But is that something Narnia fans will support? The Box Office will let us know.
