From the moment Blair Fetter was hired by Amazon's Head of Global Television Peter Friedlander to take over Worldbuilding and Genre Series on Feb. 2, 2026, "the fix was in on Martin Gero's Stargate series," according to sources involved. "Once Fetter was hired, they never had intentions of making it work."

Making it work meaning seeing through the 18 months Gero had already spent planning and in pre production for the first new Stargate series in more than 17 years. Gero's, who started as a Story Editor on Stargate Atlantis in 2004 and would eventually rise to executive producer by the 5th season of the show. He wrote numerous episodes of Stargate SG1, Atlantis and Universe.

He's basically an original Stargate creator and one of the things long time fans were excited about was not only that he was show running this new series, but he was collaborating with other people from the original shows including co-creator Brad Wright.

Since Gero was fired from the new Stargate series on June 2, 2026, we've learned that he was bringing back original SG1 cast member Michael Shanks, who played Dr. Daniel Jackson. His character would usher in a new group of characters from the same legacy universe with the intention of honoring the canon, but bringing in new fans to the Stargate franchise, which is a #1 priority for Amazon across all their content.

Fetter, who had climbed the ranks at Netflix for more than 13 years serving as Friedlander's right hand at the streamer up until Friedlander was hired at Amazon in September 2025, was credited for helping bring in a young new audience to Netflix content.

Mike Hopkins, the head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, is responsible for pilfering Friedlander and acquiring his nearly 14 years of success at Netflix to perhaps take a stab at that Netflix dominated 18 to 35 demographic. Gero had already been working on Stargate for almost a year before Friedlander was hired and was 100% onboard with Gero's vision at the time the series was announced less than a month after he was hired because he greenlit it.

So what happened between Oct. 9 when new Stargate was announced and Feb. 2 when Blair Fetter was hired? Amazon developed a whole new streaming strategy based around a Netflix strategy... that appears to prioritize new subscribers to the platform as opposed to retaining old ones.

Sources also have shared that the intention with Stargate once Fetter was hired was to completely overhaul the franchise along the lines of what has been done with Star Trek and Star Wars. And that executives will likely attempt to bring on a member of the older Stargate series as a consultant to make it look like they care about legacy fans, but it will be all for show.

Other sources have also confirmed the Star Trek and Star Wars type overhaul calling it a soft reboot of the franchise, which would give the newly anointed show runner Jac Shaeffer (Agatha All Along), the ability to go back and use or change old characters as her and her writing team sees fit.

Shaeffer was hired only 9 days after Fetter, which looks suspicious considering Gero was apparently finished despite not being told for another nearly 4 months. There has been no confirmation that Shaeffer was hired specifically to take over Stargate, and while that may be a coincidence, it was shared that she did not ask for Stargate, but instead it was assigned.

Safelight Pictures, the production company hired by Amazon to create new Stargate will work with Shaeffer to produce the new series. Her first step will be to write a pilot script and if Amazon is happy with it produce it. But realistically, Stargate fans are a long ways from seeing anything officially on screen.
