Marvel Studios has confirmed that *Black Panther 3* is in production development for a theatrical release on December 15, 2028\. The film will complete the trilogy director Ryan Coogler began in 2018, and it will do so with a new actor in the title role: David Jonsson, who will play an adult Prince T'Challa II, the son of the late King T'Challa.

Marvel first made the announcement at its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25th. Studio president Kevin Feige and Coogler presented the news together. Coogler, who directed the first two films and is coming off an Oscar win for *Sinners*, will return to direct and co-write the third installment. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke joined him on stage, confirming their returns as Shuri and M'Baku.

The announcement ended a long period of informal signals rather than official word. Wright said in January 2023, shortly after the release of *Black Panther: Wakanda Forever*, that she believed a third film was already in the works. The film had also been the subject of an inadvertent early reveal: in 2024, Denzel Washington said in an interview that Coogler was "writing a part for me in the next *Black Panther*." Coogler confirmed in 2025 that Washington has a role in the film. His character has not been disclosed.

## A new Black Panther, not a recast

Jonsson, 32, is known for *Alien: Romulus* and *The Long Walk*. According to Empire, he was cast quietly roughly six months before the Comic-Con announcement and had to keep the news to himself in the meantime.

His character was introduced in the post-credits scene of *Wakanda Forever* (2022), which revealed that T'Challa and Nakia had a son, raised in secret in Haiti under the name Toussaint, whose Wakandan name is T'Challa. Because the character was a young child in that scene, the third film involves a time jump to present him as an adult. Coogler told the Comic-Con audience to expect that jump given the character's age in the previous film.

The casting approach continues the position Marvel took after Chadwick Boseman's death in August 2020\. The studio declined to recast the original T'Challa, and *Wakanda Forever* was built around the character's death and the succession of his sister Shuri to the mantle. The third film passes the mantle to the character's son instead. It will be the first *Black Panther* film since the 2018 original to have a Black Panther as its sole lead.

## Shot on film, built for IMAX

Coogler has said the film will be shot on 70mm film and made for premium large formats, including IMAX and Dolby. It is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to be shot on film since *Eternals* (2021), in a franchise that is otherwise produced digitally. Reports differ on whether the film will be shot entirely on film or only partly, and that split has not been resolved publicly.

The most recent production news concerns exhibition rather than casting. In IMAX's latest earnings call, held this month, the company said Coogler plans to shoot on film and tailor the movie to the IMAX experience, and that the film will be released in IMAX and in IMAX 70mm, the company's giant-format film presentation. IMAX also said it is working to add ten to fifteen new IMAX 70mm film locations ahead of the release. Whether cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who shot *Sinners* with Coogler, will shoot this film has not been confirmed, according to Variety.

## Where the franchise stands

The first *Black Panther* (2018) grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, the first superhero film to be so honored. *Wakanda Forever* followed in November 2022, grossed about $859 million worldwide, and functioned in large part as a farewell to Boseman's character.

Before the third film arrives, members of its cast will appear in *Avengers: Doomsday*, which opens in December 2026\. *Black Panther 3* itself is part of Marvel's Phase 7 and sits on the far side of *Avengers: Secret Wars*, scheduled for December 2027.

## What is not yet known

Filming has not begun, and Marvel has not announced a production start date. Reporting earlier this year indicated the film was heading into pre-production before the end of 2026\. No trailer, teaser, or footage of any kind exists, and none is expected before 2027 at the earliest.

Plot details have not been released. Beyond Jonsson, Wright, Duke, and Washington, no additional cast has been confirmed, and Washington's role remains the film's largest open casting question. Marvel has said further details about the story and cast are expected next year.
